LIBYA: CRED CALLS FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF THE INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS OF THE GLOBAL SUMUD CONVOY
As of 11 June 2026, eleven international volunteers connected to the humanitarian convoy Global Sumud, a civilian initiative in solidarity with the people of Gaza, are reportedly still being held in eastern Libya.
The detained volunteers come from Argentina, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Uruguay, and the United States. Among them are the Italian citizens Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia.
According to publicly available information, ten of the volunteers were detained on 24 May 2026 near Sirte while taking part in activities related to the international convoy bound for Gaza. An additional Tunisian volunteer is reportedly being held in a related case.
The organizations promoting the mission, together with Amnesty International and other human rights organizations, have denounced the detention as arbitrary, citing restrictions on contact with family members and legal representatives, conditions of isolation, and serious concerns regarding the physical and psychological well-being of those detained.
According to statements released by the organizers, some of the volunteers have undertaken forms of hunger strike to protest the continuation of their detention.
Regardless of differing political views regarding the conflict in the Middle East, we believe that the protection of the fundamental rights of detained persons must remain an absolute priority.
CRED therefore calls for:
- the immediate verification of the health conditions of the detained volunteers;
- full consular access for all foreign citizens involved;
- respect for the guarantees provided by international law and humanitarian law;
- maximum transparency regarding the procedures currently underway;
- a rapid resolution of the situation allowing the volunteers to return to their families.

国际特赦组织（Amnesty International）及多个人权组织认为，此次拘留属于任意拘留，并对被拘留者与家属及律师联系受限、长期隔离以及身心健康状况表示严重关切。根据组织方发布的信息，部分志愿者已通过绝食抗议持续拘留。
CRED呼吁：
- 立即核实被扣留者的健康状况；
- 保障外国公民获得充分的领事探视权；
- 尊重国际法和国际人道法规定的权利保障；
- 提高案件处理的透明度；
- 尽快解决事件，使志愿者能够返回家人与亲人身边。
